ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Contraception is usually needed up until the age of 55.
There are two main types of coils:
Hormonal coil:
- Most types work for 5 years or more.
- As well as providing contraception, an IUS is good if you have heavy or painful periods as it usually lightens or stops your period.
Copper coil:
- This coil can be used for emergency contraception as well as ongoing contraception.
- Most types work for 5 or 10 years.
- There are absolutely no hormones, so your periods will continue (they may become longer, a little more heavy and painful).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
At Time to Pause I want women to feel empowered about all aspects of their health. I passionately believe in preventative medicine. Knowledge is power and understanding your own individual risks is key in trying to keep fit and healthy as we age.
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) which includes heart disease and stroke is the leading cause of death in women. The number of women with CVD is increasing due to the pandemic of obesity and associated cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure.
We know there are clear differences between men and women such as age of onset, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of CVD.
The diagnosis of heart attacks and strokes are often delayed or missed in women. Early warning signs present differently in women than men. In fact, we know that standard angiograms that look for blocked vessels often do not pick up the smaller microvascular changes that occur in women. Unfortunately, too many women are falsely reassured.
Even universal risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes have more of an impact on women’s cardiovascular health than in men.
Women also have sex specific cardiovascular risk factors which include a past medical history of PCOS, endometriosis, gestational diabetes, hypertension disorders of pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia.
As women age, they can experience weight again, this can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes, cholesterol can rise and women tend to find their systolic blood pressure increases (that’s the number on the top). Women often won’t have any physical symptoms to indicate these changes.
So, know your numbers and get checked.
At Time to Pause, I am aware that women are already feeling vulnerable. Therefore it is important to know that NHS health checks are available for women between 40-75 years old. (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-health-check/)
However, having worked in the NHS for 17 years I know that NHS health checks do not answer all the questions that patients have. Screening is very basic and information is far too generic. More importantly a woman’s CVD risk is often under estimated and I feel strongly that the time given to explain your individual results is lacking hence the need for these Know your numbers Clinics.
Cervical smears
Pricing: £195

These appointments cannot be made online, but please do email the clinic if you would like to book a private smear and we can arrange a suitable appointment for you.
Contact: info@timetopause.co.uk
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
There are around 3,300 new cervical cancer cases in the UK every year, that’s around 9 every day (2017-2019).
Cervical screening (a smear) helps prevent cervical cancer. In England cervical screening currently prevents 70% of cervical cancer deaths. If everyone attended screening regularly, 83% could be prevented.
Cervical screening is for women and people with a cervix, the cervix is the entrance to your womb (inside your body at the top of your vagina). Having cervical screening lowers your chances of getting cervical cancer. Screening finds abnormal cells so they can be removed before they become cancerous.
What happens at a smear test?
At your screen a female nurse or doctor will insert a speculum, check that your cervix looks healthy and take a sample of cells from your cervix; these are then sent to the lab to check for HPV, the virus that causes cervical cancer. If the result is negative, it is highly unlikely you have any abnormal cervical cells and we advise you to be rescreened in 3-5 years. If HPV is found then the lab will look at the sample for abnormal cells (cytology). If there are no abnormal cells you should have another screen in 12 months. If there are abnormal cells we will advise you how to be referred to gynaecology for further investigation and treatment called a colposcopy.
Isn’t a cervical smear available on the NHS?
While cervical screening is available on the NHS, we know that for many midlife women particularly, this can be an uncomfortable experience. While the actual test only takes about 10 minutes, our appointments are 20 minutes long, to allow you plenty of time for questions, to feel prepared, and to recover afterwards. Women find that this helps to make this test much more comfortable.
How often should I be screened?
The NHS offers screening every 3 years from age 25 to 49 and every 5 years from age 50 to 64. This is because most cervical cancers occur in women between these ages. Some people are screened more often due to a previous screening result.
At Time to Pause we are happy to screen women >25 years annually. We would not recommend that women <25 are screened as rates of cervical cancer are low in this age group and it is common to pick up minor abnormalities that clear up on their own. Women under 25 years who have symptoms they are concerned about should see a doctor and be examined.
You should consider having screening regardless of your sexual orientation, sexual history, or whether you have had the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.
Having a cervical screen privately will not affect your eligibility for your next NHS screening test when it is due.
Sadly screening cannot prevent every cervical cancer so if you have any symptoms such as unusual bleeding between periods, after sex or after the menopause, or unusual vaginal discharge, please speak with your GP as soon as possible.
